Cochlear was created in 1981, Sydney, Australia. It is the first medical device company to create the multi-channel cochlear implant and currently one of the world’s largest manufacturer of cochlear implants, hybrid electro-acoustic and bone conduction systems.
Australian ear, nose and throat surgeon, Dr Graeme Clark, had invented the world’s first multi-channelled implant and the Australian government wanted to bring the implant to the commercial market. The Australian government gave AU$4million to Paul Trainor is given to start the commercial development of the multi-channel cochlear implant.
Today, the company holds over 70% of the implant market share worldwide, with more than 250,000 people receiving one of Cochlear’s implants since 1982.

Cochlear’s latest generation of implants is the Nucleus Profile Plus Series. It features:
– World’s thinnest full-length perimodiolar electrode.
– Designed to best fit a cochlear’s natural shape and preserve the natural structures during surgery.
– Newly designed implant coil plates either side of a magnet pocket which contains a removable magnet cassette. This design allows for easy magnet removal and replacement for MRI.
